New Instagram safety features for teens and families 🫶
Instagram has introduced new features to support teens and families.
Instagram tests feature to block explicit images in direct message requests ⛔
Instagram is testing a feature designed to block explicit images from appearing in direct message requests. This move comes in response to research indicating that trolls have been using unsolicited direct messages to target high-profile women with abusive content. The trial will restrict users to sending a single direct message request to individuals who do not follow them, and this request will be limited to text only. Images or videos can only be sent via direct message once the recipient has accepted the request.
This initiative is expected to prevent users from receiving unsolicited images or videos from people they don't follow, according to a statement from Meta, Instagram's parent company. The decision was influenced by a study revealing that TV presenter Rachel Riley, women's safety campaigner Jamie Klingler, and magazine editor Sharan Dhaliwal had been subjected to misogynistic, hateful, and graphically violent messages in direct message requests.
Instagram plans to roll out this new feature to its over 1 billion users worldwide after the trial is completed. Other changes include encouraging teenagers to add their parents as supervisors of their accounts after blocking someone, and a global launch of its "quiet mode" feature, which turns off notifications and sends auto-replies to direct messages. The company is also considering asking teens to close the app if they are using the Reels feature at night.
In addition, Meta announced safety changes for its Messenger service, including parental supervision tools that allow parents to see how much time their child spends on Messenger and view their contact list. However, these tools will not permit parents to read their child's messages.
