Threads launch brought forward π°οΈ
Threads is now available in the UK and can be downloaded from Google Play and the App Store.
No desktop version yet. threads.net has a QR code which directs you to the Android or Apple download as appropriate.
First impressions? Looks how you'd expect, works well and has the friendly Instagram vibe.
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has launched a new app called Threads. This app is seen as a potential competitor to Twitter, with a clean and simple layout that replicates the basic functionality of the Twitter feed. Some of the features of Threads include:
Posts can be up to 500 characters long, and can include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length.
Threads are presented in the main feed, and users can like, re-post, and reply to each update.
Threads has been designed to work on a decentralized protocol, enabling greater portability and data control. However, it won't be fully functional in this respect at launch.
Users will have a threads.net username that will be discoverable across other apps using ActivityPub, including social platforms like Mastodon.
Threads enables simple switching between light and dark mode.
Voice notes, photo and video tagging are coming to the app, and post reactions are being considered.
An algorithm 'lightly' ranks posts for now, and recommendations from accounts you don't follow may be highlighted in your Threads feed.
Hashtags are currently not active on Threads, but may be soon.
Users will be able to limit replies on each post to either profiles that they follow or only those mentioned in the thread.
Despite some resistance from the open social media access community, Threads is seen as a promising new platform. It is expected to attract a significant number of users, particularly from Instagram's large user base, and could potentially become a viable alternative to Twitter.
Social Mind: Social and AI Insights
Welcome to Thursday's update and today's social media news π°
A big day for social media with the launch of Threads and plenty of mainstream media attention and it dominates today's update.
I'll be on BBC Hereford and Worcester just after 11am with an explanation of what it's all about and what's likely to happen next.
Then I'm off to Gloucester for a 'Charities in the digital age' networking event.
Oh, and I'll also be spending lots of time on Threads π You can find me at @pollingersocial talking about social media and running.
Have a productive day whatever you're up to.
