TikTok’s algorithm will be optional in Europe 🤖

TikTok is introducing changes in Europe to make its personalized content algorithm optional for users. This move comes as a response to the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA). Here are the key points from the article:

Optional Personalized Algorithm: TikTok users in Europe will have the choice to turn off the personalized algorithm that powers the "For You" and "Live" feeds.

Content Recommendations: When users disable this function, they will be shown "popular videos from both the places where they live and around the world" rather than content tailored to their personal interests. This is in line with the DSA's stipulations that mandate large online platforms to give users the option to opt out of receiving personalized content, which often depends on tracking and profiling user activity.

Search and Feed Changes: To further comply with the DSA, TikTok's search feature will display content that's trending in the user's region. Additionally, videos in the "Following" and "Friends" feeds will be shown in chronological order when the non-personalized view is chosen.

Personalized Ads for Young Users: European users aged between 13 and 17 will not be targeted with personalized advertisements based on their online behavior by default. Instead of the previous system where they had to manually opt out, this will now be the standard setting.

Other Platforms and DSA: TikTok is among 19 companies, including other major platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter, that are subject to the DSA's regulations. It's anticipated that these platforms might also introduce similar changes in Europe.

Implementation Timeline: While TikTok hasn't specified an exact release date for these modifications, the company aims to fulfill the DSA's requirements by its deadline of August 28th.
